The defining experience

antarctica

A journey to Antarctica starts well before the plane reaches the ice. The expedition leaves Cape Town by private jet, crossing the Southern Ocean before landing on a blue ice runway cut into the Antarctic interior. When the cabin door opens, the cold hits fast. Most people stop for a second before stepping out. The silence is what catches them first. Antarctica is not just white and cold. The light has a hard, almost metallic clarity to it, and the scale is difficult to judge at first. Glaciers run to the horizon. Blue ice rises in ridges off the plateau. Far off, mountain ranges appear where you do not expect them. Even people who have traveled widely tend to go quiet when they first step onto the ice.

reserve my spot

From a remote polar camp deep in this landscape, the days open up into a kind of exploration that is hard to compare to anything else. Ski equipped aircraft carry the group over fields of wind polished ice to emperor penguin colonies along the coast. In some places, the birds are heard before they are seen, their calls carrying across the ice before the colony comes into view. Helicopters lift over mountain ranges and ice valleys that would be almost impossible to reach any other way. On the ground, guided outings move across glaciers and frozen ridgelines that have looked much the same for longer than anyone can really picture. Some days feel active and fast moving. On others, people find themselves standing still for long stretches, just watching weather move across the plateau.

For many travelers, the South Pole becomes the moment that stays with them. To stand at the Geographic South Pole, at the point where every line of longitude meets, feels both celebratory and slightly unreal. A glass of champagne on the ice at the bottom of the world is not something many people will ever experience. Back at camp, evenings are warmer and quieter, with private dinners and long conversations beneath the Antarctic sky. After dinner, guests often step outside again before turning in, looking out over the ice in the pale light and realizing there is almost nothing else on earth that feels this remote.
