Arrival is in Geneva where Lake Geneva stretches toward the first walls of the Alps. Within an hour the road reaches Annecy, a lakeside town of canals, stone bridges, and cafés set directly along the water. The route then climbs into the Bernese Oberland where Grindelwald sits beneath steep cliffs and glaciers. Cable cars rise into open alpine meadows and one of the most memorable descents is on a trotti bike, rolling down quiet mountain roads toward the valley with the glaciers in view.

Lucerne shifts the pace. Wooden bridges cross the river where it meets the lake and the old town gathers along the waterfront with mountains rising directly behind it. In Chamonix the scale of the Alps becomes unmistakable. A historic cog railway climbs toward the Mer de Glace while the cable car to the Aiguille du Midi rises high above the valley to a narrow summit platform where France, Switzerland, and Italy are visible at once.
